I’m a Mental Health and Addictions Counselor living in Denver Colorado – and have been working with people, in a helping context, as a researcher, author, speaker, teacher, coach, guide, facilitator, and mentor since 2014.
Right now I operate, under clinical supervision, as a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate (LPCC) and Addictions Counselor Candidate (ADDC) registered with the Colorado State Boards of Licensed Professional Counselor and Addiction Counselor Examiners. I’m also a Certified Trauma Professional (CTP), Certified Anxiety-Informed Professional (CAIP), and Certified Life Coach (CLC).
I earned my Masters of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the CACREP-accredited CMHC program at Walden University, became a PhD student studying Integral Transpersonal Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) – specializing in Consciousness Studies and Contemplative Neuroscience, and in 2024 transferred to the PhD program in Humanistic Clinical Psychology at Saybrook University – where I’m currently specializing in Complex Trauma and the Healing Process. My BS is in Information Technology, and I hold twin AAS degrees in both Technology and Personnel Management.
As a therapist, my main areas of clinical focus are anxiety, depression, addiction, and trauma; along with their common co-occurring and comorbid concerns. Most of my time is spent providing psychoeducation on neurobiology and psychophysiology to help clients better understand “what’s happening beneath the hood”, engaging in discourse that highlights the importance of self-compassion and self-care as essential to the therapeutic process, and collaboratively working together through whatever challenges they may be facing.
As a side note, I’m planning to begin offering psychedelic-assisted therapies once DORA’s Natural Medicine Division has established its legal framework for training, licensure/certification, and healing-center requirements. After my PhD work is complete I will also be eligible for licensure as a Clinical Psychologist in Colorado, and am intent upon pursuing an additional postdoctoral master’s degree in Clinical Psychopharmacology to qualify for Colorado’s new designation of a Licensed Prescribing Psychologist.
My overall approach represents an eclectic mix of nondual, contemplative, somatic, existential, humanistic, transpersonal, integral, relational, and trauma-informed approaches; with a deep client-centered focus and a heart-felt desire to transform human suffering into wisdom, compassion, and loving-action. The main clinical interventions I draw from include the trauma-informed use of ACT, DBT, CBT, Mindfulness-based CBT, Internal Family Systems, Inner-child Work, Narrative therapy, Focusing, Somatic Experiencing, Exposure Therapy, the Gottman Method, Solution and Brief Solution Focused, Motivational Interviewing, Nonviolent Communications, Applied Behaviorism, Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Breathwork, Psychedelics, and more; along with various forms of mindfulness, meditation, and contemplative practice.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent time in the U.S. Air Force – my last assignment being with Air Force Special Operations Command. In 2000, I left the military to become a cybersecurity consultant, providing strategic security management services for multiple Fortune 500 companies, military organizations, and government agencies around the world. Then, in 2014, facing an existential crisis of identity, I experienced a sudden and profound shift in perception that fundamentally altered every aspect of my life. After that, I became devoted to service – offering mindfulness, meditation, and contemplative wisdom teachings to those experiencing pain and suffering in their lives. By 2018, I had enrolled in a masters program to become a therapist, started my PhD training in 2022, and earned my preliminary licenses as a mental health and addictions counselor in 2023.
These days, I work as a Primary Therapist at the Redrock Recovery Center in Lakewood Colorado and have my own private practice that I work in after-hours. I spend most of my personal time researching mental health topics, hanging out with my girlfriend Lisa and her autistic son Evan, and relaxing with my cat “Buddy”. I’ve been living a fully vegan lifestyle since June of 2004; don’t identify with any particular political, philosophical, religious, or spiritual system of personal belief; have deep compassion for the suffering of all beings, which tends to align me with humanistic, liberal, and progressive causes; am an autodidact and lifelong learner who has broadly studied science, psychology, philosophy, and religion; and the work I do with clients facilitates a shift in conscious perception that is deeply psychological, heart-centered, and wisdom-based.
